Bazı araştırmacılar günlüklerin, yazarın yalnız kendiyle başbaşa, mahrem bir alan içinde içini boşaltmaya yarayan özel notlar almasından ibaret olmadığını düşünürler. Buna göre, türün şahsiliğinin yanında yazarın hem kendi geçmişi ve çevresi hem de kamusal alanla kurduğu ilişkiler ağı günlük yazımını etkiler. Dolayısıyla tür, bu anlamda psikolojik ve edebi incelemelerin yanında politik ve sosyolojik araştırmaların da malzemesi olabilir. Günlük yazımı sırasında hiçbir yazarın bulunduğu ortamın şartlarından ya da kendi geçmiş deneyimlerinden izole olmaması geçirgen bir durum yaratır. Bu geçirgen durum, günlüklerde “normal’’ olana uyabilmek için çaba harcayan kamusal benlik (public self) ile bastırılamayan ve satır aralarında aniden açığa çıkan özel/şahsi benliği (private self) bir araya getirir. Bu araştırma ise günlük türünün öneminden, niçin göz ardı edildiğinden, otobiyografi ve anı türleriyle karşılaştırıldığında nasıl bir yerde durduğundan bahseder. Dahası günlükler hakkında yapılan incelemelerin politik, psikolojik, sosyolojik ve tarihi çalışmaların ana malzemesi olarak kullanılmasının örneklerini araştırır. Ayrıca türün yazarların “çoklu benlik”lerini irdelemek için nasıl kullanıldığına, özellikle politik ve psikolojik çalışmalarda günlük yazarının kurduğu yeni kişiliklerin ne gibi bir önem arz ettiğine değinir. Böylelikle günlüklerin edebi araştırmalar ve disiplinlerarası çalışmalar için uygun ve nitelikli bir saha yarattığını gösterir.

Some researchers state diaries are not completely composed of the authors’ private notes for pouring their thoughts out in such a private area. According to this assertion, besides the genre’s being personal, author’s relational network that he set between both his own background, environment and public area affect the writing of diary. Therefore, this genre can be the material of political and sociological studies beside psychological and literary researches. The fact that the author is not isolated from environmental conditions and his background creates a permeable situation during the writing of diary. This situation bring together the public self that tries to comply with what is “normal” and the private self that emerges suddenly between the lines. This research deals with the importance of the genre of diary, why it was ignored, where it stands by comparison with the genres of authobiography and journal. Moreover, it investigates the example usages of the researches on diaries as the main materials for political, psychological, sociological, and historical studies. Besides, it mentions how the genre is used for probing into the authors’ multi-selves, what sort of importance the new selves that the authors set through their diaries have in political and psychological studies. Thus, it manifests that the diaries create a suitable and quality field for literary and interdisciplinary studies.
