Industry Activities In Turhal (Tokat)

The research area is developed in Turkey’s Black Sea Region, Middle Black Sea Area Yeşilırmak Basin, on one of Turkey’s biggest tectonic systems, KAF (North Anatolian Fault Zone). It is developed on a plain morphologically and it is a settlement with a 62,596 of urban population according to the data from 2013, where the service function is dominant. The industrial function is the basic function starting the urbanization in the research area; however, this is the city’s second important function today. The modern industry started in the area with the establishment of Turhal Sugar Factory, one of the initial steps of Turkey in terms of industrialization between the years 1930 and 1939. In the area, which has a type of industry which was initially based on agriculture, industrial activities gradually developed in three separate branches, these being machinery, stone-based industry and textile industry. Two factors developed the industrial activities in the research area. One of them is the advantages offered by the geographical features. The second and the most important one are the incentives. After the establishment of the sugar factory, which is a public investment, the research area ranked among the regions of incentive between the years 1973 and 2004. Thus, stone-based industry quickly developed in the city in the 1970s, while the textile industry developed in 2000s. However, industry has not been able to reach the desired level in Turhal despite the incentives it has taken, geographical position, transportation conditions and potential prosperities. Reasons like the excess of competition or unfair competition, the problem of intermediate staff, demand instability, insufficiency of technology, qualified worker problem and raw material quality problem have had an effect on this problem. All of these have prevented Turhal from being an industrial city and caused industry to come 2nd after service sector.
