The Views Of Administrators And Teachers Concerning Compulsory Education Being 4+4+4 = 12 Years (The Case of Van Province)


This study aimed at revealing the views of administrators and teachers concerning compulsory education being 12 years discontinuously. The research universe consisted of 79 primary schools, 80 middle schools, and 35 high schools located in the city center of Van Province, and the research sample comprised of 30 primary schools, 30 middle schools, and 15 high schools randomly selected from among 194 schools situated in the city center of Van Province. A total of 225 administrators and 300 teachers from 75 schools were included in the study group (i.e. 3 administrators and 4 teachers from each school). The obtained data were analyzed via SPSS 18.0. It was found out that administrators and teachers believed that the 4+4+4 system would make our state and nation reach the level of modern civilizations and the launch of the direction (orientation) approach, which was introduced by this system, as of the middle school 1st grade was a reform on its own, and that teachers and administrators were not informed by the ministry enough in regard to the reasons requiring such changes in the education system and the goals intended to be achieved with such changes. In consideration of the foregoing, the present study put forward some implications: To conduct such direction (orientation) approach realistically in accordance with children’s intelligence types, implementers need to be provided with an in-service training about the subject; and courses aimed at introducing discontinuous compulsory education should be arranged based on in-service activities in order to inform teachers and administrators.
