Marriage Customs In Karakoçan


Marriage which is the second important phase of human life, occurs by some ceremonies which are suitable with cultural structures of societies, by the reason of its values and role in social life. Transferring of marriage practices and beliefs to next generation is important to maintain of culture. In Anatolia, marriage and marriage practices have important characteristics concerning social and cultural structure. Marriage practices take form according to some phenomenon like religion, customs, and traditions. However, getting married of young people in the appropriate age occurs around the belief and cultural components in Karakoçan district of Elazığ Province. It is seen that some components which are belonging to the old Turkish culture and the traditional turkish religion, continue their existence with obtaining Islamic motifs. The topic of this article is description and analysis of the marriage customs in Karakoçan. Participant observation and in-depth interview were used to collect data. Then, the data was evaluated using descriptive method in terms of history of religions. The aim of this article is to transfer marriage practices in Karakoçan to the next generations and to contribute to the Turkish culture.
