1795’ten sonra kurumlaşan oryantalizmin tarihi kökeni Ortaçağ’a kadar dayanır. Yüzyıllardır süregelen İslam karşıtı birçok eserde görülen oryantalist faaliyetler, Batı’nın bilinçdışında Doğu’nun bir “öteki” olarak algılanmasına neden olmuştur. Oryantalizm üzerine önemli çalışmaları olan Edward Said’e göre Doğu, Avrupa’nın en köklü, en büyük ve en zengin sömürgelerinin mekânı, dillerinin ve uygarlıklarının kaynağı, kültürel rakibi ve en derin, en sık tekrarlanan “Öteki” imgelerinden biridir. Batı, Doğu’ya öteki açısından yaklaşarak hem kendi sınırlarını çizmekte hem de ötekini olmasını istediği gibi tanımlamaya ve anlamlandırmaya çalışmaktadır. Edward Said’e göre Batı’nın Doğu düşüncesi her zaman Batı’yı yücelten ve Batı’nın üstünlüğüne vurguyu tekrarlayan bir yapıdadır. Bu yapı ve söylem her zaman egemen olma çabasındadır. Batı ile Doğu karşılaştığında bu söylem kendini yeniden üretir. Dolayısıyla Doğu’yla ilgili çalışmalarda Batı’nın hâkimiyet algısının ve Doğu’ya karşı önyargısının temelinde, sömürü alanları yaratma düşüncesi görülmektedir. Batı’nın emperyalist politikalarına hizmet etmek üzere olan gelişen oryantalizm, bir taraftan Doğu’nun öteki olarak algılanılmasına neden olurken diğer taraftan siyasi, ekonomik, askeri gibi emperyalist uygulamaların arka planını oluşturmuştur. Haçlı zihniyetinin bir devamı olan oryantalizm çalışmalarında Doğu kültürünü tanıma, ötekini anlama çabası, Batı’nın çıkarlarına hizmet eden ve iyi niyetten uzak bir yaklaşımın sonucu olarak gelişmiştir. Bu amaçla genelde Doğu’nun özelde Türkiye’nin bu politikalara karşı geliştireceği millî bilinç ve duyarlık hayati önem taşımaktadır.

Which is a continuation of the Crusades in the Eastern cultures recognize the work of Orientalism , in an effort to understand the other , serving Western interests and goodwill as a result of an approach has evolved away from.
