Misyonerlik, Hıristiyan Katolik dünyası için her dönem önemli olmuştur. Bu nedenle illegal şekilde en zor şartlarda dahi yürütülmeye çalışılmıştır. 16. Yüzyıla girildiğinde Kanuni Sultan Süleyman tarafından Fransa’ya Osmanlı topraklarındaki Katolik toplulukların koruyuculuğu imtiyazı verilmiştir. Bu imtiyaz ile misyonerlik kurumsal bir yapı kazanmaya başlamıştır. Bu dönemden itibaren misyoner yayılma politikaları, İstanbul merkez olmak üzere Osmanlı topraklarında Levant misyon görevleri ile yürütülmeye çalışılmıştır. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun azınlık politikası Millet Sistemi farklı din ve kültür gruplarına kendi kültürlerini devam ettirme yönünde hoşgörü sağlamıştır. Bu sayede misyonerler rahat hareket edebilmişlerdir. Ayrıca gittikleri her yerde dayanışma oluşturabilecekleri Katolik topluluklar bulabilmişlerdir. Bu açıdan geniş Levant coğrafyasında yürütülen misyonerlik faaliyetleri, gelecek dönemlerde Batı emperyalizminin temel esaslarını oluşturması bakımından çok kritik bir öneme haizdir. Bu bakımdan da misyonerlerin İstanbul’a gelmeleri ve burada teşkilatlanmaları çok önemlidir. Bu kapsamda Misyonerlerin İstanbul’a gelişleri, burada yerleşmeleri ve Levant misyonunu başlatmaları konusunda değerli bilgiler, bir Cizvit papaz-yazar olan Peder Piolet tarafından yazıya dökülmüş ve dönemsel olarak meydana gelen her türlü gelişmeler kaydedilmiştir.
