Tereke kayıtları, kadılar tarafından tutulan, ölen kişiye ait mal dökümleridir. Bu belgelerde müteveffaların para değeri olan taşınır taşınmaz tüm mal varlığıyla borç aldığı ve verdiği miktarlar kayıt altına alınır. Örneğin eski bir çift çorabın, bir miktar ipliğin bile kayıt atına alınması ve fiyatlandırılması bu belgelerin ne kadar teferruatlı olduğunu anlatır. Bu cümleden de anlaşılacağı üzere tereke kayıtları Osmanlı toplumu, toplumun tüketim alışkanlıkları, geçim kaynakları, ekonomik durumları ve daha pek çok konunun incelenmesine olanak vermektedir. Tereke kayıtları bu denli zengin veriler içermesi sebebiyle, siyasi gelişmeler dışında Osmanlı toplumunu inceleyen araştırmacıların dikkatini çekmiştir. Bu güne kadar terekelere dayalı pek çok çalışma yapılmıştır ve yapılmaktadır. Bu noktada çalışmalar yapılırken tereke kayıtlarının güvenilirliğinin sorgulanması gerekmektedir. Bu çalışma tereke kayıtlarının güvenilirliğini sorgulamayı amaçlamaktadır. Bunun için iki ayrı tereke defteri kullanılmıştır. Konuyla ilgili yaptığımız çalışmada tereke kayıtlarında bazı tutarsızlıkların olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Tutarsızlıkların sebeplerinin neler olabileceği sorgulanmıştır. Bu noktada tutarsızlıkların iki sebepten olabileceği düşünülmüştür. Bunlardan biri kaydı tutan kişinin dikkatsizliği, diğeri de bu kişilerin mirastan mal kaçırma amaçlarıdır. Özellikle belirli noktalarda pek çok kadı tarafından yapılan benzer hesaplama hataları, kadıların bu işi bilinçli yaptığı izlenimini vermektedir. Görülen o ki, tereke kaydını tutan kadılar veya yardımcıları, yaptıkları bu hesap hatalarıyla kendilerine ayrıca bir gelir elde etmişlerdir.
