Vocabulary Of Ferruhnâme That Is One Of The 16th Century's Politics Treatises

Political treatises that lead and guide rulers and other administrators in many matters particularly the matter of administration have a very old tradition. These written works reflect the political, social and cultural structures of the periods when they were written, and are also important in terms of language, to the same extent. Generally subjects such as morality, virtue, justice, and administration are focused on, in political treatises considered to be one of the most important branches of ethical written works. When these subjects are discussed, examples of various historical events are given, and subjects are tried to be consolidated by use of a large number of verses, hadiths, sayings and idioms. Thus, these works contain a wide range of materials in terms of vocabulary. This study discusses a work titled Ferruhnâme, which is a political treatise translated from Arabic to Turkish in the sixteenth century by Nasûh Nevâlî (died in 1003 / 1595) of Akhisar. First of all, this study informs the readers about Ferruhnâme and Nasûh Nevâlî, and then goes onto discussing the theme and reproductions of this work. The etymology of the entry words forming the work is determined and their ratios in the text are studied. Then proverbs, idioms, reduplication and archaic structures in this work are determined, and the proverbs and idioms are compared to the usage in modern Turkish, if any. As a result of the study, it is concluded that there are approximately 8327 entry words on this work and 66 % of these entries are derived from Arabic, 21 % Farsi and 8 % from Turkish. 5 % of the words on this work combine two or three of Arabic, Farsi and Turkish structures. It is seen that there are over two hundred idioms and ten proverbs on this work which is particularly rich in use of idioms. Some of these idioms and proverbs are still in use today but some are obsolete words.
