Turkish-Persian Linguistic Relationships: The Use of Possessive Suffixes in Persian

Different language families along with their different lexicons have some typological peculiarities which separate them from each other. In this context, the use of possessive suffixes in Turkish is one of these differentiating peculiarities splitting it from Indo-European languages. Though New Persian is known to be Indo-European, it has possessive suffixes too. Contrary to typological structure of its language family, New Persian uses possessive suffixes in constructing possessive case of nouns. This study, using synchronic and diachronic method, compares the grammatical structures of possessive case for nouns in old and new Indo-European languages with that of New Persian and accounts for the approximation of New Persian to Turkish in this respect.
