METONYMIES ABOUT DEATH IN SEYAHATNÂME OF EVLİYÂ ÇELEBİ

Death which has become a destiny for men with birth takes away them from the environment where they live, family, lovers. As death is not a tested event, it makes men feel frightened, anxious even hearing this word. So men have mostly used metonymies with the help of other notions instead of using the words “death” and “die”. The reasons of this attitude are the worry of euphemism, beside emotional reasons such as respect, love, hate and worry of providing influental and impressive narration. Metonymy is telling a notion with the help of other notions which are relevant to it. By this means, meaning changes and polysemies are provided by producing new meanings for present expressions. However, metonymy which is thought as a instrument used for decorating literary and artistic works is an important part of daily conversations and actions. Metonymies reflect different aspects of men’s physical and cultural experiences. Evliyâ Çelebi who achieved to have an original style and a metalanguage as a result of the environment that he grew up, his education and subtle wit, gave a place to metonymies by using either his original examples or different forms in literary language in Seyahatnâme which he indited in Ottomon Empire times of 17th century. Among theese, there are metonymies used for “death” and “die”. In this work, metonymies which are used for the verb “die” in Seyahatnâme which is one of the unique sources of the history of Turkish culture are studied. The first three volume have been choosen of Seyahatnâme which is ten volume work as a whole.
