Armenians ,who lived under Ottoman rule for centuries, formed an important part of Ottoman society. Armenians, known as “Loyal Citizens”, engaged in architecture, literature and trade, and became a significant minority that prospered gradually in the 18th and 19th centuries. Armenians, like other factors in Ottoman society, were affected by the nationalist movements. In addition to this, they began to rebel against the current authority with the incentives of Russia, Britain and France. The Armenian Question was moved to the international agenda for the first time with the Berlin Congress of 1878.Armenians, who were mentioned in the Article 61st of the treaty signed at the Berlin Congress, became an important issue for the Ottoman Empire. So, following the Congress of Berlin, Armenians established some associations and did some acts that violated the public order in various regions of the Ottoman Empire. The Sanjak of Tokat was one of the regions in which Armenians began to rebel. Armenians attacked the built-Islam people in the Sanjak of Tokat and its townships, and the conflicts were tried to prevent by Bab-ı Ali. Even after the reign of II. Abdul Hamid, through which the Ottoman Empire passed a difficult period, Armenian events that intensified at the end of the 19th century increased with the intervention of the Western powers. This study focused on the causes of the Armenian events and the politics that the Western States performed over the Ottoman Empire. It also sought to analyze the Armenian events that occured in Tokat, a sanjak of Sivas, between the years of 1890 and 1900. In addition, this study aimed to contribute to analyze the Armenian events as a whole that occured in many points of the Ottoman Empire from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
