Mush and Its Arounds in The Period of Seljuks

During the reign of the Caliph Umar, one of the conquered cities by the Muslims was Mush. Until the arrival of the Seljuks, the Muslims domination on the Mush region was partially achieved. Because, the settlement of the Muslims and the Islamization have been less in the city and counties. However, Muslim Arabs can be seen particularly inhabited in Manzikert in the ninth century. This situation changed with the Seljuks. Mush was conquered in 440/1048 the first time and Manzikert was conquered in 462/1070 by Great Seljuks. Battle of Manzikert achieved a victory by Great Seljuk Sultan Alparslan in 463/1071 has been a turning point. Along with the war of Manzikert which is a county of Mush, the city has become an Islamic place with Muslim Turks and Kurds. After the war of Manzikert, Turkmens mostly inhabited in Mush and its arounds. Mush and its arounds was given Sundukoğulları, Marwanids and Sökmens as iqta. After Sökmens Eyyübis dominated Mush and its arounds and Harzemshahs dominated there short term. Anatolia Seljuks dominated them in 629/1232. However, this dominance didn’t take long. Because, after Mongols invaded Erzurum in 640/1242 and defeated Anatolia Seljuks in Kösedağ in 641/1243, Mongols had control over Mush and its arounds. Esenlik Village Mosque (1325) and Hacı Seref Mosque (1343) are the buildings which belong to the period. Abdurrahman Pasha Bridge and Murat Bridge have been evaluated as Seljuk buildings because of their architectural characteristic even though there haven’t been any inscriptions on them.
