Mecma’ul-Havâs Of Sâdikî Afşar: Biograpical Memoirs Written In Chagatai Turkish


Sâdıkî (940/1553-?), one of the famous artists of the Shah Abbas era (1587-1629), is Afshar Turkmen. Sadiki, in his youth, completed the training on painting murals in the accompany of Behzad’s nephew, well known mutiralist Muzaffar Ali, (1450-55? / 1535-36?). After he completed his training he became one of the famous mutiralists of his period. He is the owner of the collection of poets’ biographies consisting of poetical, literary works written in Turkish and Persian. Afshar Sâdıkî Beg wrote Mecma’ul-havâs in Chagatai Turkish as a response to Alî Şîr Nevayî’s Mecâlisü’n-Nefâyis. It is estimated that during the two years 1597 and 1598 the Mecma’ul-havâs was written in the eastern area of the Turkish language. It was the second and the final biographical work written in Chagatai Turkic. This work, covers a vast geographic range from the territory of the Ottoman Empire, covering current Iran, Azerbaijan, Central Asia, Afganstan, up to Pakistan and India. Sadıki wrote about poets and artists who lived in his period. He wrote about their works in order to promote poetry and art of the artists and to create an interest in and learning of their works.
