Klasik Türk şiiri tarihinde, yalnızca matlalardan oluşan beyitlerle eser tertip etmek, Kâbilî ve Hisâlî’nin mecmuaları haricinde -şimdiki bilgilerimize göre- sık karşılaşılan bir durum değildir. Ancak hâlihazırda, elimizde yedi örneği bulunan bu tarz, şiir geleneğimiz içerisinde özel bir yere sahiptir. Öyle ki XVI. asır şâirlerinden Defterdâr-zâde Ahmed Cemâlî’nin “Metâli‘-i Cemâlî” isimli eseri, bir nazım şekli olarak kabul edilen ‘matla’ terimine farklı boyutlar getirmiştir. Defterdâr-zâde Ahmed Cemâlî başta “Metâli-i Cemâlî” olmak üzere, edebiyat tarihimize; “Şehr-engîz-i İstanbul”, “Şehr-engîz-i Siroz” adlı iki şehrengiz, latifelerden oluşan “Denâ’et-nâme-i Cemâlî”, bir başka latife numunesi olan “Berâ-yı Kimyâ” risalesi, atasözleri ile teçhiz edilmiş “Risâle-i Durûb-ı Emsâl”, mesnevi tarzında kaleme alınmış bir “Nasihat-nâme” bağışlayarak önemli katkılarda bulunmuştur. Bu bakımdan şâirin üslubundaki orijinaliteyi, söyleyişindeki samimiyeti, hayal dünyasındaki zenginliği, ifadelerindeki gerçekçiliği ve bilhassa şiire getirdiği yenilikleri ortaya koymak, bu çalışmanın edebiyat tarihimize ve kültürümüze olan katkısı bakımından mühimdir. Latifeye dayalı üslubunun birer numunesi olan eserlerinden hareketle bu makalede ilkin; kıymetli kaynaklarla desteklenen ve zengin malzemelerle teçhiz edilen klasik Türk şiiri geleneğinde, şâirin “Metâli‘-i Cemâlî” adlı özgün eseri üzerinden, bir nazım şekli olarak ‘matla’dan ve “Şehr-engîz-i İstanbul”undan hareketle bir tür olarak ‘şehr-engîz’den söz edilmiştir. Daha sonra Cemâlî’nin hayatı, sanatı ve eserleri hakkında bilgi verilmiş, “Metâli‘-i Cemâlî” ve Şehr-engîz-i İstanbul” adlı eserleri tanıtılarak şâirin edebiyat tarihimizdeki yeri ortaya konulmuştur.

On classical Turkish poetry, ebyat of metali only to organize work, except for Kâbilî and Hisâlî mecmuas, according to current knowledge, is not a frequent occurrence. A sample of the style of the present article is based on the works of pleasantries at first; which is equipped with rich ingredients and precious resources in the tradition of classical Turkish poetry, Cemâlî's Metâli'-i Cemâlî's out of the original work, as a form of a poem, ‘matla’ and the "Şehrengîz-i Istanbul" from his work as a kind of movement ‘şehrengîz’ has been mentioned.
