Toplumcu gerçekçilik, sanatta yansıtma prensibiyle hareket eden realizm akımının yirminci yüzyılda kazandığı farklı yaklaşım tarzlarından biridir. Realizmin imkânlarından faydalanarak kendine mahsus ilkeler geliştiren toplumcu gerçekçilik, sanatsal bir akım olmakla birlikte ideolojik bir duruşun da temsilcisidir. Düşünsel arka planını Marksizm’den alan bu yöntem, Rusya’da sosyalist düzene geçilmesinin ardından gündeme gelmiş ve 1934 yılında temel ilkeleri kararlaştırılmıştır. Bu bakımdan toplumu ekonomik ilişkiler ekseninde değerlendiren, işçi ve köylü sınıfının çektiği sıkıntılara değinen ve sosyalist ideolojinin gösterdiği hedeflere ulaşabilmek için çeşitli çözümler üreten bir sanat anlayışı geliştirilmiştir. Türkiye’de ise ilk sosyalist faaliyetler, II. Meşrutiyet Dönemi’nde ortaya çıkmıştır. Bahsi geçen dönemde sosyalizmin ilk temsilcileri, siyasi teşkilatlanma çabalarının yanı sıra kendi yayın organlarını kurarak çeşitli gazete ve dergiler yayımlamaya başlamışlardır. 1920’li yıllardan itibaren bu dergilerde sosyalizme mensup şairler tarafından kaleme alınan şiirler aracılığıyla sosyalist düşünce Türk şiirine yansımıştır. Sonraki yıllarda yaşanan siyasi olaylar nedeniyle zaman zaman kesintiye uğramasına rağmen sosyalist/toplumcu şiir, 1970’li yıllarda en parlak dönemini yaşamıştır. Hilmi Yavuz’un 1977 yılında yayımladığı Doğu Şiirleri’nde de toplumcu gerçekçi bazı yaklaşımlar tespit edebilmek mümkündür. Gençlik yıllarında hümanist bir tavırla yaklaştığı sosyalist ideolojiyi Doğu Şiirleri’ne yansıtan Hilmi Yavuz, şiirleriyle Türkiye’nin doğusunda yaşanan hayata temas etmiştir. Bu bakımdan Doğu’da hüküm süren şartları yansıtırken toplumcu gerçekçi edebiyat anlayışının temel ilkeleriyle denk düşen bir tavır sergilemiştir.

Socialist realism is one of the new approaches of realistic art which mention the principle of reflection. Socialist realism that advances new principles with reference to realistic art, apart from being an artistic movement, is also a representative of an ideological standing. With reference to Marxist idea, it is debated after the socialist administration victory in Russia and the primaries principles are decided in 1934. From this regard, an artistic approach is advanced whish evaluate the society in the line of economic relations. This artistic approach also interest with the trials and tribulations of the common workers and villagers. It presents different solutions in order to achieve to the goals of socialist ideology. We see the firs socialist attempts in II. Constitutional Period. In this period the first socialist representatives in addition to political organization attempts by constituting their media organs they started to publish their own newspapers and journals. The socialist idea is reflected to Turkish Poetry by the socialist poets with the poems based on socialist principles since 1920. Due to some political events in the last years, we see a corruption for the socialist poetry. Nevertheless, the socialist poetry lives its most brilliant age in 1970. It is possible to see some motifs of socialist realism in the book of Hilmi Yavuz named as Doğu Şiirleri and published in 1977. Hilmi Yavuz approach to socialist ideology with a humanist attitude in his youth and reflects his socialist ideology to Doğu Şiirleri. Then he contacts with the life of Turkey’s east by his poems. From this regard by reflecting the living conditions in East, he presents a compatible attitude with the primaries principles of socialist realism literature.
