Bu çalışma, coğrafya bölümü ve coğrafya öğretmenliği anabilim dalı mezunlarının mezuniyet sonrası karşılaştıkları istihdam sorununu irdelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma verileri 2003-2013 MEB ve ÖSYM verileri taranarak elde edilmiştir. Tarama yönteminin kullanıldığı araştırmanın, bu alanda yapılacak çalışmalara katkı sunması umulmaktadır. Türkiye’de coğrafya bölümü ve coğrafya öğretmenliği anabilim dalı mezunları, mezuniyet sonrası istihdam sorunu yaşamaktadırlar. 2013 YÖK verilerine göre Türkiye üniversitelerinde 33 coğrafya bölümü ve coğrafya öğretmenliği anabilim dalı bulunmaktadır. Bunların 17’sinde ikinci öğretim kısmı vardır. 2013-2014 öğretim yılından itibaren mevcut 8 coğrafya öğretmenliği anabilim dalına YÖK’ün aldığı karar sonucunda öğrenci alınmamıştır. Coğrafya bölümü ve coğrafya öğretmenliği anabilim dalı kontenjanı 2003’te 880, 2004’te 890, 2005’te 965, 2006’da 1078, 2007’de 1094, 2008’de 1689, 2009’da 1856, 2010’da 2245, 2011’de 7635, 2012’de 7835 ve 2013’te 4646 kişidir. Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı tarafından 2003’te 36, 2004’te 135, 2005’te 65, 2006’da 93, 2007’de 527, 2008’de 492, 2009’da 881, 2010’da 602, 2011’de 681 ve 2012’de 608 coğrafya öğretmeni atanmıştır. 2013’te ilk kez yapılan ÖABT sınavına, coğrafya öğretmenliği alanında, 4 519 aday girmiştir. Buna karşılık, MEB 2013 atamasında coğrafya öğretmenliğine 481 kontenjan ayırmıştır. Ataması yapılan coğrafya öğretmeni sayısı, mezun sayısına göre oldukça azdır. Bu nedenle mezunların büyük kısmı ya işsiz kalmakta ya da özel sektörde düşük ücretle çalışmaktadır. Öte yandan, 2005’ten itibaren sözleşmeli coğrafya öğretmeni uygulaması başlamıştır.

This study aims to adress the problem of emplyment faced by the graduates of Geography and Geography Teaching departments. The research data was obtained by scanning the data of MEB (Ministry of Education) and ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center). The research, in which the method of scanning was used, is aimed to contrubite to the studies made in this field. Graduates of Geography and Geography Teaching departments are having problems about employment in Turkey. According to the data presented by YÖK (Board of Higher Education) in 2013, the total number of Geography and Geography Teaching departments is 33 in Turkish universities. 17 of them provide evening education. From the academic year 2013 – 2014, no students were accepted to 8 of the current Geography Teaching departments, as a result of the decision given by YÖK. The quotas of Geography and geography teaching departments were as follows: 880 people in 2003, 890 in 2004, 965 in 2005, 1078 in 2006, 1094 in 2007, 1689 in 2008, 1856 in 2009, 2245 in 2010, 7635 in 2011, 7835 in 2012 and 4646 in 2013. The number of geography teachers appointed by the Ministry of Education was 36 in 2003, 135 in 2004, 65 in 2005, 93 in 2006, 527 in 2007, 492 in 2008, 881 in 2009, 602 in 2010, 681 in 2011, and 608 in 2012. 4.519 candidates participated in the Preceptorship Content Knowledge Test (ÖABT) when it was initially introduced in 2013. On the contrary, Ministry of Education allowed a quota of 481 for geography teaching in 2013 appointment. The number of the geography teachers that were appointed was considerably high compared to the number of graduates. Therefore a huge proportion of the gruadates were either left unemployed, or had to work for low wages in private sector. Besides, in the year 2005, a contractual implementation for Geography Teaching started.
