A Philological Research On The Nouns Of Orhan Veli`s Poetry

Orhan Veli was born in Istanbul on April 1914. Orhan Veli who had a deep interest for French attracted the attention of his teachers. His first poems were published with his friends Oktay Rifat and Melih Cevdet Anday in the Varlık Magazine. He used the pseudonym` Mehmet Ali Sel` in some of his poems. The Three friends start to give examples for the poetry of `Garip` in the 15th September 1937 edition of the Varlık magazine which would be a reform in the Turkish Literature. The `Garip` movement is an expression of a reaction against the philosophy and understanding of poetry that came before this movement. While this research was being carried out, all the types of nouns in Orhan Veli`s book , `All his poems` were detected by us and it was found out that the poet used 5865 nouns in all his poems. According to the classification that we have made, approximately 65% of these nouns are concrete nouns. This shows that the poet does not write emotional poems and he gives importance to reality as he is impressed by the real life and the problems of the people. Orhan Veli clearly describes the daily life during the Second World War with more concrete nouns. It is possible to see slight irony in these poems. It is as if Orhan Veli is secretly enjoying himself with the events of the real life in most of his poems. We believe that this research is a philological research that is rarely done in the Turkish Literature. In our research, we tried to know and understand Orhan Veli; a poet who made a reform in the Turkish Literature according to some artists and intellectuals and for others a poet to be reviled.
