A Study On The Tradition Of Folk Architecture In The Yuruks Of Macedonia

Folk architecture is a cultural pheomenon which is shaped according to needs of the folk, who creates it, and presents the lifestyle, social relationships, types of production and consumption, beliefs and traditions of the society in the plainest way. As in every are, the industrial revolution and rapid social change also led to radical changes in the field of architecture and created major innovations in building technology and materials. Besides, folk architecture and vernacular architecture knowledge are, although partly, maintained especially in rural areas. It is both a social task and a cultural neccesity to conserve and hand down to next generations our folk architecture which forms a part of our intangible cultural heritage. The first step of conservation is to carry out evaluation Works, in other words, researches on folk architecture. Despite all types of negative circumstances, Turkish culture and cultural heritage survive in the current territories of Macedonia conquered by the Ottoman empire in the XIVth century and occupied by the Yuruks and Turcomans who were brought by the Ottoman rule from Anatolia. This article has been prepared in the light of the information obtained through the field work in the Republic of Macedonia and comprises the analysis of the cultural and traditional dimensions of indigenous folk architecture. The field work resoults reveal that the folk architecture phonomenon in this area very similar to various area in Turkey (Western, Interior Western and Soughtern Anatolia Region). Building construction techniques, design, function, hardware and traditional architectural terminology most closely resemble each other.
