The Names Of Horses According To Theirs Coat Colors, And Their Signs, From Historical Turkish Dialects Through Present


Within vocabulary, names in general as per their type in a dictionary and specifically names used to designate animals and colors have an important place as units establishing the link between things and their names in a linguistic sense. This paper includes names related to horse coats (hair), body and leg appearances and signs of horses, and color of their mane hair. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate proportional vastness of vocabulary in Turkish regarding horse coats, emphasize that Turkish words related to horses and horse coats tended to decrease and sank into oblivion in parallel to disappearance of horses from social life with regards to relation of people with things and contribute to linguistic studies by analyzing links between things and names departing from names used for horses and horse coats by compiling the vocabulary generated over time within the framework of the horse concept, which has an important place in Turkish culture. The words complied in this paper have been taken from the dictionaries of historical dialects comprising of the general vocabulary of the Turkish language and the indices of sources, historical and modern day dictionaries on the Turkish language spoken in Turkey, dictionaries on the accents of the Turkish language spoken in Turkey and indices added to accent studies, basic grammar book indices, books and articles on the topic and online web sites prepared related to the theme. Nomenclatures in modern day Turkish dialects other than the Turkish language spoken in Turkey have not been included here. In this study, totally 820 names where determined; 573 names for horse coats; 143 for head and neck signs; 83 for leg signs; 21 for mane and tail.
