Dialect words used everyday are found in dialect dictionaries but as some of the words are used in written language, they are found in general dictionaries as well. The most comprehensive printed dialect dictionary of today’s Turkey Turkish is the Compilation Dictionary of the Turkish Language Institution. The enriched version by vocabulary of this dictionary is printed on the same institution’s web site under the title of Turkish Dialects Dictionary. In this study, the meaning of thirteen words (avara, balkımak, bölme, cacık, cazgır, çelek, eştirmek, gergi, haydamak, kımkım, salmalık, tirildemek, yoz) which are used in the Kandıra Dialect are given. These words are attributed to public dialect (indicated as hlk) in the Turkish Dictionary’s 10th edition, printed by the Turkish Language Institution in 2005. These words are not found in the Compilation Dictionary and are not in the Dictionary of Turkey Turkish Dialect, either. For instance, in the 10th edition of the Turkish Dictionary the meaning of “cacık” known by everybody is a “drink with garlic, prepared by cutting up cucumber or lettuce in yogurt or ayran” and in public dialect is “a kind of herb”. are found. Including the two meaning seven different ones are found in the Compilation Dictionary. But, “cacık” means cucumber in the Kandıra Dialect. This meaning is found in none of the two dictionaries and not in the Turkey Turkish Dialects Dictionary either. These meanings, which were confirmed by six people living in two villages of Kandıra in 2010 using a survey method and are not found in the latest edition of Turkish Dictionary printed in 2011 either. In thıs study, it is recommended to add these meanings to the Turkish Dialects Dictionary’s relevant articles.
