The first educational institution in the Islamic world was to be built by the last Prophet on the front yard of the Mescid al-Nabawi (Prophet’s Mosque) in Madina after the Hijrah and named Suffa. Offering education in the prescriptions and commands of the Quran, the Suffa established itself as a model for other educational institutions set up within mosques or externally. As certain rules and standards became to govern and guide the teaching of Islamic sciences, the establishment of educational institutions outside of mosques gained momentum with first such centers emerging in Islamic countries in the early periods of the 11th century. The Seljuks founded the first madrassa having settled down in Anatolia in 1071. With the establishment of the Ottoman Fiefdom in 1299, a number of new madrassas were to be founded or existing buildings were to be refurbished as madrassas. Education in the first Ottoman madrassas was to focus on the tafsir of Quran, hadith of the Prophet and Islamic fiqh. Sultan Fatih commissioned the building of the Sahn-ı Seman Madrassa after the conquest of Istanbul in an attempt to enable education in rational sciences rather than purely focusing on traditional sciences. Along with this, the reform of the curricula raised the quality of education offered in madrassas and contributed to their evolution and expansion in numbers. Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned the establishment of the first separate medical madrassa and later ordered the reorganization of existing educational institutions after the model of Suleymaniye madrassas. These madrassas were to become the most advanced educational institutions of the Ottoman Empire. Territorial losses experienced by the Ottomans from the end of the 16th century onwards were to entail economic hardships which in turn contributed to social change. This was to accelerate the dissolution of Ottoman madrassas and give birth to the creation of new educational institutions.
