Comprehensive And Narrative Skills In Orkhon Inscriptions

Orkhon Inscriptions are the oldest known written sources of Turkic writing and they are bengi-stones which give information on Turkish culture, history and way of life. They were written in oratorical style. They consist of information given by Bilge Khagan, Kul Tigin and Vizier Tonyukuk on wars fought by the Turks against other tribes and clans; their advices and warnings relating to the survival of Turkish peoples. They enable us to reach information about Turkish military tradition, Turks’ perception of sovereignty, state organization, Turkish history, culture and customs. These inscriptions, which dated back thirteen centuries, are basis of modern Turkish in terms of sentence structure, usage of verbs and words. There have been various studies on language characteristics of Orkhon Inscriptions, but no studies were made directly on language education and training. In this study, these inscriptions are analyzed in terms of four basic language skills; comprehension and narrative skills. Concepts of reading and listening skills (comprehension skills) and concepts of talking and writing skills (narrative skills) are identified and examined. This study is a descriptive study and survey model is used. During the survey, term/word-word groups, which belong to comprehension and narrative skills, are identified from the inscriptions. These term/word-word groups are classified according to sub-categories as reading, listening, talking, writing and are subjected to content analysis. In light of these data, application of comprehension and narrative skills in Orkhon Inscriptions are established.
