Toplumun önemli birer ferdi olarak şair ya da yazarların eserlerinden hareketle yapılan söz varlığı çalışmaları, ilgili yazar ya da şairin kavramlar dünyasını ve dünya görüşünü yansıtması açısından oldukça önemlidir. “Söz varlığı, en kısa tanımıyla kültürün aynasıdır. Bir toplumun yaşayışına, yaşayış şekline, hayata bakış tarzına, maddî ve manevî değerlerine, inançlarına kısacası kültürüne ilişkin ilk bilgileri söz varlığından elde edebiliriz. Söz varlığı toplumun konuştuğu dilin sözcüklerini, deyimlerini, hazır söz kalıplarını, atasözlerini kapsar. Bir dilin söz varlığı, aynı zamanda o dili konuşan toplumun kavramlar dünyası, dünya görüşünün bir kesitidir” (AKSAN 1997). Bu görüşten hareketle, bu makalede, Sait Faik Abasıyanık’ın kültürünün ve hayata bakış tarzının eserlerindeki yansıması anlatılmaya çalışılacaktır. Sait Faik Abasıyanık’ın on bir kitabı; Alemdağ’da Var Bir Yılan, Havada Bulut, Havuz Başı, Kayıp Aranıyor, Kumpanya, Lüzumsuz Adam, Mahalle Kahvesi, Sarnıç, Semaver, Son Kuşlar and Şahmerdan’ın genel dizinine ulaşılmıştır. Metinlerde geçen kelime ve kelime gruplarından hareketle söz varlığı ile ilgili kavramlar listesi oluşturulmuş, ayrıca Sait Faik’in üslubu için ipucu veren, üslubunu yansıtan cümlelerden yola çıkılarak genel söz varlığına dair neticelere ulaşılmaya çalışılmıştır.
