On the Words of Uighur kiçig erŋek, Karakhanid çıçalak and Turkish serçe parmak


Hands and fingers have been important for societies as they are basic and fuctional members of the body. In various societies fingers have been seen as an important element in teaching number and conception. Due to all these situations fingers are cared and they have taken different names with sometimes the same and sometimes different points of wiew. ‘the little finger’ which is named as kiçig er?ek in Uighur, in most cases it is interpreted as çıçalak and its derivatives in Divanü Lugati’t-Türk and later period and areas of Turkish language. It is remarkable that two different words are used to name the little finger in the texts of Uighur and Karakhanid which indeed have many associations in sound, form and vocabulary qualities. The usage of Kiçig er?ek decreasing in usage after Uighur has mostly given its place to çıçalak. the comprehension is named as serçe parmak only in Turkish. In some texts those belong to the 15th and 16th century Anatolia area it is also named as sırça barmak. Besides there are many words that meet the little finger in the dialects of Turkish such as cıddik parmak, cırt barma?,cırtlık parmak, cici banak, çeçele barma?, çıta parmak, çiçe, çite parmak, çıtık parmak, çili parmak, çinçe parmak, dilce parmak etc. In this study, both er?ek ve barmak (parmak) words, generally used in the meaning of ‘finger’ in Turkic, and their relationship with each other, the names of fingers in Turkic and the factors for giving these names with a historical point of wiew are going to be mentioned, without assessing from the etymological aspect; and fundamentally serçe parmak in Turkish and probable reasons of this naming by drawing inspiration from different usages in dialects in Turkish are going to be interrogated.
