Modern Türk şiirinin önde gelen isimlerinden İsmet Özel, yaşamı ve dünyayı anlamlı kılma adına daimi bir çaba içerisinde olmuş, bu çabasını ise şiir ile somutluğa ulaştırmıştır. Özel, kendisi ve toplumu için “hayatı dokunulur kılma, otantikliği yakalama, kendilik değerleri doğrultusunda dimdik bir yaşam sürme” amacını benimser. Bu yaşam amacının önüne çıkan engellere ise boyun eğmez, yaşamın güzelliğini gölgeleyen her şeye başkaldırır. Şiirlerindeki başkaldırı unsurları ise çoğunlukla baskı ve otoriteye, yabancılaşmaya, modernizmin yozlaştırıcı etkisine yöneliktir. Akılcılığı esas alması itibariyle insanlık tarihine aydınlama çağı yaşatan modernizm, bilimin gelişmesi, toplumun ilerlemesi, yaşam koşullarının iyileşmesi, refah seviyesinin yükselmesi gibi pek çok yöndeki getirilerinin yanı sıra çeşitli olumsuzlukların var olmasına da yol açmıştır. Modernizmin insanlığa olumsuz yansıması ise insanları manevi değerlerinden uzaklaştırma, yabancılaştırma, kitleselleştirme, aynileştirme ve tüketiciliğe sürükleme yönünde olmuştur. Özel şiirlerinde, tüm bu durumlara olan eleştiri ise başkaldırıya dayanan bir söylemle belirir. Öte yandan Özel, anti-modernist bir tavırdan ziyade modernizmi yanlış algılayan ve bu akımı insanlığın değer kaybına zemin yapan zihniyete karşı eleştirel bir tavır takınır. O, modernizmin olumlu yönlerini ayırır, bununla birlikte modernizmin kötücül dokunuşlarından biri olan kapitalizmi, kapitalizmin toplumda yarattığı sınıf farklılıklarını, bu farklılıklar sonucu ezilenler sınıfının oluşmasını, modernliğin getirilerini insanlığın aleyhine kullanan zihniyeti kabullenmez, tüm bunlara başkaldırır. Çalışmamızda İsmet Özel şiirlerinde modernizmin eleştirisiyle beliren başkaldırı unsurları incelenmiştir.

One of the leading personalities of modern Turkish poetry, İsmet Özel, has always made an effort to render both the life and the world meaningful and has chosen to manifest these efforts through poetry. Özel adopts the purpose of "making life tangible, attaining authenticity, living a straightforward life in light of personal values" both for himself and his society. He never gives in to the obstacles rising in front of this life purpose. He rebels against anything that diminishes the beauty of life. The rebellion elements in his poetry mostly address oppression, authority, alienation, and the degenerative effects of modernism. Despite its benefits in many fields, such as the improvement of science, society, betterment of living conditions and increased prosperity, along with having brought on the age of enlightenment for the history of humanity; modernism, as it adopts the principles of rationalism, has brought about many problems as well. The negative reflections of modernism on humanity have been distancing mankind from moral values and have resulted in alienation, collectivity, uniformity and driving people to consumerism. In his poems, Özel appears with a discourse based on criticism and rebellion against all these issues. However, rather than choosing an anti-modernist approach, Özel criticizes the mentality which misunderstands modernism and transforms this trend into a background for the loss of values in humankind. He sets aside the positive sides of modernism, yet does not accept capitalism which is one of the detrimental results of modernism, the class disparities caused by capitalism, the formation of the oppressed classes due to these disparities, and the mentality which uses the advantages of modernity against humanity. Instead, he rebels against all of these concepts. Our study focuses on the rebellion elements that have appeared in the poetry of İsmet Özel with the criticism of modernism.
