Literary Arts in Latîfî’s Tezkire and Assessments About the Literary Arts

Tezkire tradition has started in the 15th century and has proceeded till 20th century. As an indispensable resource for biographies of poets, tezkire has been seen in the field of Anatolia since 16th century. Tezkiretü’ş-şu’arâ ve Tabsıratü’n-nuzamâ was written by Latîfî and followed Sehî Bey’s Heşt Bihişt as the second tezkire of Anatolia. Tezkiretü’ş-şu’arâ ve Tabsıratü’n-nuzamâ, was presented to Suleiman the Magnificent, after it was completed in 1546. Tezkire, comprises some biographical information, some anecdotes and samples of poems which belong to 334 poets living in the Ottoman Empire from the period of Murat the Second to 1546. Latîfî, differs from his contemporaries in terms of his objective and incisive assessments about poems. In his tezkire, regardless of position and the status of the poets, they were given the deserved value and some of them even were criticized also. It has been realized in the course of time that Latîfî wasn’t mistaken in his detections. In his literary work Tezkiretü’ş-şu’arâ ve Tabsıratü’n-nuzamâ, Latîfî put a new face on Turkish works by ordering the poets alphabetically instead of ordering them chronologically different from Molla Câmî’s Bahâristan, Ali Şîr Nevâyî’s Mecâlisü’n-nefâ’is and Sehî Bey’s Heşt Bihişt, which were written before his own age. In this article Latîfî’s Tezkire was analyzed in terms of literary arts. The skills, accepted as art by Latîfî, were emphasized. Following the assessments of Latîfî and his samples of poems, literary arts were examined in terms of whether they mach up or not with the common definitions. Inferences were made upon the art consideration of the Divan poetry via looking through Latîfî’s point of view.
