The Galat Dictionaries and Mehmed Hafîd Efendi’s Galatât Dictionary and the Chagatayies Words of It


In this study, the general information about galat (false usages) dictionaries and the reference books including the galat words and structures are analysed. The galat dictionaries written between the dates from the beginnings of the nineteenth century and the first fifteen years of the twentieth centuries are collected. We pointed out the opinions of the writers about the galat from their own dictionaries. And we also focused on the importance of the galat words in the light of the language history. The scientific data of galats in our century and the galat dictionaries are used in our study. The example galats about the Turkish language and the galats wich are in Turkish are all structured in our investigation. Mehmed Hafîd Efendi’s dictionary known as Ed-Dürerü’l-Müntahabâtü’l-Mensûre fî-İslâhi’l-Galatâti’l-Meşhûre wich is the oldest one written in Turkish, having a rich vocabulary, and also with a huge volume and that has not been specially searced. In this dictionary the Chagatay Turkish words are all pointed out in respect to their etymologies that is very importent for our study, and this words have been translated in to the Latin letter.
