Nihlistic Character İn The Novel 'Huzur' : Suad

Suad”,who is one of the characters of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar in the novel “Huzur”(Peace), has not been analyzed properly yet. Suad can be regarded as a “nihilist” character given his not feeling any responsibility against the society, his beeing against every moral values, his claiming that the wars can dicipline the human beings, and his commiting suicide at the end of the story. The facts that he rejects any feeling of accountability of his actions and his disbelief in Allah do also display his nihilist personality. In the novel, Suad symbolyzes the semi-intellectuals who imitate the “West” without having a thourough understanding about the basic premises of the “West”. If we think that the concept of “Unrest” is closely related to the concept of “nihilism”, we can conclude that the author condemns “nihilism” by means of the character of “Suad”.
