Ölüm teması, evrenselliği dikkate alındığında bütün edebiyatlarda işlenen ortak bir temadır. İnsanlığın evrendeki varlığıyla eşit bir geçmişe sahip olan ölüm; yine insanlık tarihi boyunca, başta çeşitli dinler ve doktrinler olmak üzere; düşünürler, âlimler ve sanatçılar tarafından mercek altına alınarak her toplumun kültür düzleminde, kendine bir yer edinmiştir. İslam öncesi Türk kültüründe de çeşitli inançlar içinde yer bulan bu tem, İslamiyet sonrası teşekkül etmeye başlayan Divan şiirinde de geniş biçimde kullanılmaktadır. Başta ölüm ve ecel olmak üzere, fenâ, âhir, son, yokluk, vuslat, öte gibi çeşitli kavramlarla ifade edilen bu hakikat, Divan edebiyatının kuruluş devresi diyebileceğimiz 15.yüzyıla kadarki süreçte de, yine mısralardaki varlığıyla muhataplarına soğukluğunu hissettirmeye devam etmiştir. Makalemizde Kadı Burhaneddin'in şiirlerinde ölüm temiyle ilgili yaklaşımlar ve Kadı Burhaneddin’in ecel kavramına bakışı değerlendirilecektir.
