Eski Asur toplumunda, çocuklara isim vermede her toplumda olduğu gibi, inançların, adetlerin ve geleneklerin büyük yer tuttuğunu görmekteyiz. Asurlular çocuklarına inançları gereği tanrılar adına yapılan teofor isimler vermişlerdir. Bunun yanında geleneklere uygun olarak bazen dedelerinin ismini alan çocuklar da görülmektedir. Erkek çocuklarına manalı ve güzel isimler verilirken kız çocuklarına isim vermede fazla özen göstermedikleri anlaşılmaktadır. Bu çalışmamızda, isimlerden hareket ederek Asur toplumunun inançlarını, geleneklerini ve değer yargılarını tespite çalışacağız.
It can be seen that, in the Old Assyrian society, like in all other societies, the customsand traditions played an important role in giving name. Assyrians that given teophore names, based on the God’s names, to the newborned babies or sometimes they had given some children their ancestors names in accordanca with their beliefs. In addition that unlike girls, the boys had given the expressive and good names. In this study, I will try to evaluate Assyrians beliefs, traditions and values in the framework of the names given to their children.
