Halide Edip’in Kenan Çobanları piyesi, teknik ve muhteva bakımından klasik bir opera olamamasına karşın devrin sosyal ve siyasî şartlarının etkisiyle mektep çocuklarına feminist ve semitik düşüncelerin sanat vasıtasıyla aktarılmaya çalışıldığı bir eserdir. Eserin, mektep müsamerelerinin kalıplarının dışına çıkamaması da bunu kanıtlar. Kenan Çobanları’nın Türk edebiyatındaki en önemli yeri, bir Türk kadın yazarı tarafından yazılmış ilk opera denemesi olması ve ilk defa İslamî bilgi ve kültür kaynaklarının dışında Kitab-ı Mukaddes’ten yararlanılarak bir Hz. Yusuf macerası anlatmasıdır.
In spite of the fact that "Kenan Çobanları", the piece of Halide Edip cannot be a classical opera in terms of techniques and content, it is a work that aimed to transfer the feminist and Semitic thoughts by means of art to the students with the influence of social and political conditions of the period. That it does not go beyond the patterns of school shows is the proof of it. The most important role "Kenan Çobanları" played in Turkish literature is that it is the first opera attempt written by a Turkish woman and for the first time the Old Testament outside of Islamic knowledge and cultural resources is used to relate an adventure of Joseph.
