Doğu bilimi içinde gelişen Türkoloji daha sonra bağımsız bir bilim alanı haline gelmiştir. Türkoloji tarihi içinde “Sovyet Türkolojisi”nin çok önemli ve özel bir yeri vardır. Çarlık döneminde başlayan Türkoloji çalışmaları, Sovyetler Birliği döneminde artarak devam etmiştir. Sovyet Türkolojisinin önemli kilometre taşlarından biri de 1926 yılında Bakü’de yapılan “Birinci Türkoloji Kurultayı”dır. Bu kurultayın Sovyetler Birliği sınırları içinde, Moskova’nın desteği ile düzenlenmesinin önemli sebepleri vardır. Bu kurultay sebepleri gibi sonuçları bakımından da oldukça önemlidir. Özellikle Sovyetlerdeki Türk topluluklarının Latin ve ardından Kiril alfabesine geçiş süreci, Sovyetlerdeki Türkologların “pantürkist” suçlamalarına maruz kalarak öldürülmeleri bu kurultayın doğurduğu sonuçlardan bazılarıdır. Bu bağlamda, Türkiye’de ve dünyada Türkoloji alanında meydana gelen gelişmelerin önemli bir bölümü de Bakü Türkoloji Kurultayı ile ilgilidir.
Turcology evolving from Orientalism has later become an independent field of science. “Soviet Turcology” has a particularly significant and special place in the history of Turcology. Turcology studies beginning in the Tsardom period accelerated in The Soviet Union period and in this period many works were produced. One of the most important mile stones of Soviet Turcology is “ The First General Assembly of Turcology” which was held in Baku in 1926. There are some significant reasons why this general assembly was organized within the borders of the Soviet Union with the support of Moscow. This general assembly is also very important in terms of its results as well as its reasons. Especially, the process of transition to Latin Alphabet and successively to Cyrillic Alphabet in Turkish communities in the Soviets and the murders of some Turcologists living in Soviets by exposing them to “panturkist” accusations are some of the outcomes emerged from this general assembly. In this context, an important part of developments in Turcology field in Turkey and in the world is related to BAKU GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF TURCOLOGY.
