Bu çalışmada tütünün tarihi ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’na gelişi hakkında kısa bir değerlendirme yapılarak İngiliz konsolos raporları ışığında; XIX. yüzyıl ortalarında Drama Sancağı’nda tütün yetiştiriciliği, ziraati, hasat ve bakımının ne şekilde yapıldığı, yetiştirilen tütün sınıfları ve bir ihraç ürünü olarak tütünün bölgedeki önemi ele alınmıştır. Ayrıca Drama Sancağı’nın dışa açılan kapısı konumundaki Kavala Limanı’ndan ihraç edilen tütün miktarı, tütün ticareti açısından bu limanın önemi ve bu ticaretin Kavala hinterlandına nasıl bir etki yaptığı konuları üzerinde durulmuştur.
In this study, first of all the history of tobacco and its introduction to the Ottoman Empire is going to be touched upon briefly. Then the cultivation of tobacco and types of tobacco grown in the Sanjak of Drama during the mid 19th century and its importance as an export crop in and around the region have been analyzed according to the British consulate reports. The amount of the tobacco exported from Kavalla Port, which was Drama’s door to outside world, the significance of this port for the tobacco trade and its effects on the hinterland of Kavalla have also been studied.
