Tanzimat ve sonrasında yaşanan süreç, Türk dü-şünce tarihinde çok önemli bir dönüm noktası olarak ka¬bul edilir. Sosyal, siyasî ve kültürel hayatın büyük bir hızla değişmeye başladığı bu süreçte Batılı düşünce akımlarının etkisiyle geleneksel din düşüncesi de değiş¬meye başlamış, Türk aydınlarının birçoğu pozitivist ve materyalist hareketlerin neden olduğu bir inanç bunalı¬mına sürüklenmişlerdir. Doğu ve Batı gibi birbirinden çok farklı iki dünyanın arasında kalan aydın ve sanatçı¬lar kuvvetli bir ikilem içine düşmüşlerdir. Yüzyıllar boyu İslâmî dairede kabul edilen kavramlar ve durumlar tar¬tışmaya açılmış, bu tartışma ve bunalımlar Tanzimat dö¬nemi şiirine de yansımıştır. Şinasi, Ziya Paşa ve Abdülhak Hamid bu anlamda ön plâna çıkan şairlerdir. Bu şairlerin eserlerindeki düşünceler, yaşanan inanç krizlerini göstermesi bakımından önemlidir.
The process experienced before and right after the Administrative Reforms (Tanzimat) is considered to be a turning point in Turkish history of thought. In this process during which social, political, and cultural life changed drastically, the conventional religious thoughts began to alter by the effects of western thought currents; and most Turkish enlightened people fell into a belief crisis caused by the positivist and materialistic movements. The enlightened people and artists fell into a dilemma between the East and the West which are two different worlds. Some conceptions and cases which were within the Islamic lines opened to be debated; and these debates and crises reflected also on the poetry of the period of Administrative Reforms (Tanzimat). Şinasi, Ziya Paşa and Abdülhak Hamid are the poets whose poems have such characteristics. The themes in these poets’ works are very important in that they show the belief crises.
