Abdülhak Hâmid Tarhan’ın eserlerinde hükümdarlar ve tarih önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Tiyatrolarının konuları genellikle tarihten alınmadır ve buradaki kahramanlarının çoğu da hükümdarlardır. Hâmid, onlara alegorik özellikler yükleyerek devrin hükümdarlarını tenkit etmiştir. Namık Kemal gibi bir aksiyon adamı olmadığı için muhalefetini bu şekilde yapmıştır. Eserleriyle padişahlar ve padişahlık sistemi aleyhinde kamuoyu oluşturmaya çalışmıştır. Abdülhak Hâmid Tarhan’ın eserlerindeki tarihî konulara ve şahsiyetlere hep bu gözle bakmak lâzımdır. Hâmid’in niyeti tarihî eser yazmak, tarihî dönemleri ve şahsiyetleri anlatmak değildir. Dönemin padişahlarını ve padişahlık sistemini daha rahat tenkit edebilmek, onlar hakkındaki fikirlerini daha rahat söyleyebilmektir.
History and the sultans have crucial places in the works of Abdulhak Hamid Tarhan. The topics of his dramas have been driven form the history, because of this the main characters of the dramas are mostly the sultans. In order to criticise the sultan of his time, he make use of these allogoric sultan characters. Since there was no role model like Namık Kemal, he expressed his opposition to the system with the help of allogory. It is obvious that he tried to create an aura against Sultans and the monarchism. It is neccessary to look at the historical topics in his works from this perspective. The intention of Hamid is not to write a history book and to give informatin about the historical events and people, but to criticise the dynasty and to explain his ideas about the system of Ottoman Empire.
