Bu makalede Hollanda toplumunda yabancı karşıtlığının gelişimi ve yabancı karşıtlarının son yıllardaki toplumsal profili incelenmektedir. Öteden beri yabancılara karşı hoşgörülü bir ülke olarak tanınan Hollanda, altmışlı yıllardan bu yana giderek artan göç ve göçmen sayısına karşı olumsuz tepkiler vermeye başlamış ve bugün yabancılar sorunu, ülkenin en önemli ve tartışmalı siyasal sorunlarından biri haline gelmiştir. Kültürel Değişmeler Araştırması çerçevesinde toplanan verilere dayalı olarak yapılan analizlerde yabancı karşıtlığının marjinal bir olgu olmadığı, tam tersine geniş sosyal çevrelerin bir hoşnutsuzluğunu yansıttığı anlaşılmaktadır. Yabancı karşıtlığı, hem sosyal ve ekonomik hem de kültürel açıdan yerli ve yabancı gruplar arasındaki toplumsal rekabetten kaynaklanmaktadır. Hollanda, yeniden “hoşgörülü ülke” imajını elde etmek istiyorsa söz konusu toplumsal ve kültürel rekabeti makul politikalarla yönetmek zorundadır.
This article examines the development of xenophobia in the Netherlands and describes the social profile of the xenophobian people in recent years. The Netherlands, known as a country of tolerance for immigrants, started reacting against increasing number of immigrants since the 1960’s. As a result, the issue of immigrants has currently become one of the most important and controversial political problems in the country. An analysis of data collected from the Research of Cultural Changes in the Netherlands shows that the issue of negative attitudes against immigrants is not a marginal phenomenon and that, on the contrary, it reflects discontent of large social segments in the country. Xenophobia arises from a social competition between native and foreign social groups coming from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds. The article concludes that the Netherlands has to manage this social and cultural competition with reasonable integration policies if she wishes to get her image of “land of tolerance” back to her hands again.
