The word ‘makam’, which is pronounced as ‘mukam’ in Uighur Turkish, is of Arabic origin and means ‘place’, ‘position’ and ‘degree’. as a musicological term it means also a sistemic music part. Uygur On İki Makam isn’t restricted by ‘twelve (on iki)’. In the past, the number of ‘makam’ some times increased, some times decreased. But Uighur Turks didn’t regard this increasing or decreasing progress and kept the ‘formel’ number of twelve in use. On İki Makam forms an organic integrity with the poetry first of all of Ali Şir Nevai, also Lütfi and Fuzuli, with folk epic like ‘Garip ile Senem’, ‘Tahir ile Zühre’ or ‘Yusuf-Ahmed’ and with folk songs and dances. From this point of view is On İki Makam closely related to classic and folk literature.
