Religion In The Political Structure Of Ancient Mesopotamia

As we know there are various ideas about how the firts states estbalished and its parametres but we should consider that there is an integrity of an organization on the basis of its concept. Historical periods begins at the same time in Mesopotamia and Egypt and the first political organizations appears in these lands too. In Mesopotamia, the temples, called “Ziggurat”, was the center of the city-states in Chalcolithic and Early Bronze age. The temple was not only the center of religion also the center of economy. This multi-function of the temple, political and administrative mechanism was naturally affected by the religion, a more accurate expression state mechansim expresses religion as a source. The main duty of the king, called EN, was to manage the temple and the economy in the name of God. The most importance of the temple economy was to keep the control of the labor force. On the other hand, to continue the social and political life in an orderly manner, to ensure the unity and the order in society, there needed some rules. Religion, in terms of its results, had undertaken this social task. When we consider this situation in the concept of ancient history, we may have two different results. According to this, behind the qualification of “thousand of gods land”, Hittites used the religious tolerance in order to avoid a political threat against it self by the various people which it reigned, and on the other hand, rather than the religious toleration, there appeared gradually decreasing number of gods and using the religion to centralize the function of establishing the states of Semitic tribes like Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian States. In this study we will try to discuss the case of religion in the political organizations of Ancient Near East.
