Abbreviations In Turkish

The fact that vocabulary of a language can be extended through conversion, word coinage, compounding, prefixing and suffixing is an issue that has been known and studied for a long time. However, one point that has been neglected with regard to extending the Turkish vocabulary is abbreviation. This study emphasizes that abbreviation is one way of word coinage and has made great contribution to the Turkish vocabulary. Firstly, two types of abbreviations are distinguished as textual and articulatory. Textual abbreviations are specific to written language. That is, they are not pronounced in the abbreviated form, rather in full phrase/word. For this reason, they are not new words and do not have lexical value.
