The Wedding Traditions of Assyrians in Midyat


There are some periods at every life; like birth, marriage and death that are called as transition periods. People prepares theirselves to that transition periods by customs and beliefs. Marriage traditions exist in every society of the world, but differ in aspects like choosing the spouse, quantity of spouses and marriage ceremonies. In this study, the folk dancing, traditions and practices performed in wedding ceremonies -which include religious exercises- of Assyrian community researched. Assyrian people, being discolored part of Midyat, who have a history of five thousand years and succeeded to subsist till today despite many struggles. Firstly, information was given about the ethnic identity of Assyrian community, and then wedding traditions of Assyrian community in Midyat where many people from various religions, races and beliefs and the voices of the azan and church bell sounded at the same time was mentioned. Culture in Midyat locale, religion and language variance provided conclusion of constant a cultural relations. Most distinct feature of township is being “town of religions and languages”, living under the co-existence of people of different religions over the centuries. In this study designed as fieldwork, interview questions were prepared in regard to interview technique, the list of resource people was compiled and the information was provided through predetermined adviser people by using participant and non-participant observation during the fieldwork. For the determination of concrete situation, image and voice were recorded by utilizing recording devices with people's consent and the study was supported by second-degree documents. In short, the folklore of Assyrian people is aimed to study in regard to the interviews and observations in the specified area.
