The Zayl Tradition in Ottoman Poet Biographies


“Zayl” means literally an addendum and/or contribution to something; but in the field of literary studies it means the section which is written to add on a scholarly work of an author. Almost all the examples of tazkira genre after a certain period of classical Turkish literature continued with “zayl”, therefore it is necessary to examine this tradition to see the development of the genre. In this article, biographies of poets from the Ottoman literary culture will be evaluated by focusing on “zayl” tradition, its contribution to Ottoman literary heritage in general and as a genre in particular.
