A Study of Epicurism and a ghazel of Baki’s

Epicurism which has its name from Epicure’s thought system regards values as valuable when they provide man with pleasure. In other words Epicurism is a philosophical thought which is completely materialistic and pleasure based. According to Epicuros man’s soul will eternally be annihilitated with his body so we should take all pleasure during our lives which end in any way. We should not have boundaries in taking pleasure. Epicurism has also been regarded as Hedonism which emphasizes pleasure. Our cultural values were defined with western terms and concepts as a result of the Westernization Movement. Also it was observed that many literal, cultural, artistic and theological terms in western languages were used in our language. In this regard some poets such as Baki, Yahya, Nedim were regarded as Epicurians Because of their being extrovert. In this study Baki and a ghazel of his were examined from the point of Epicurism. As lon as the poetic language as a superior language is omitted with its symbolic side there will be some lacks of text understanding and solution.
