The Studies in Europe and Turkey on the Arabic Language Dialects Spoken in Anatolia

Arabic, one of the numerous languages spoken in Turkey, is spoken by many communities of different religions and cultures with different dialects. Undoubtedly, the local and international carried out, or to be carried out, in this field will contribute to avoiding the possible extinction of a language/dialect, and contribute to the protection and development of multiculturalism and multilingualism as a value, even if it is to a certain extent. From this aspect, Arabic dialects of Arabs living in Adana, Hatay, Mersin Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Siirt, Şırnak Batman, Bitlis, Muş and other provinces, which have multicultural and multilingual structures, have attracted Europeans' interests from the second half of the 20th century. Several foreign researchers such as Albert Socin, Haim Blanc, Hans-Jurgen Sasse, Otto Jastrow, George Grigore, Werner Arnold, Shabo Talay, Ablahad Lahdo, Bo Isaksson, and Stephan Procházka have conducted studies on these dialects. This article aims to carry out a literature search about the works of the Europeans regarding the Arabic dialects in Anatolia. The scope of this research was not limited to the studies conducted in European countries. In this context, it was aimed to give brief introduction and reference information about the studies that we have reached, carried out in the recent years, including the works of Turkish scholars published in Turkish, on the Arabic dialects spoken in Turkey. This study, which is a literature review, is also a step aiming to meet that need. The young scholars studying in this field would have a chance to analyze better the strong and weak sides of those resources.
