Sultangazi District is located on the northwest side of Istanbul. It is named after the merging of Sultanciftliği and Gazi neighborhoods. It was founded in 2008 with the participation of 13 neighborhoods from Gaziosmanpaşa, one from Eyüpsultan and one from Esenler districts. Although it is a newly established district, it is located on historical waterways which are important for Istanbul since the Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. Urbanization movements in Sultangazi started with the establishment of industrial establishments in rural settlements such as Atişalani, Kucukkoy, Cebeci, Habibler and Mahmutbey which were located in the rural areas at the time of 1970s and after that the people who settled in these rural areas came to work in big industrial establishments farther than this region. The population of these settlements, which were accepted as rural areas in the that period increased gradually with migration. Over time, Sultangazi lost its own rural spesification and transformed into an urban. With this study, it was aimed to investigate the phases of Sultangazi District in terms of past, present and future geographical and administrative decisions. In the research, methods and principles of geography science are used. While the topographical features of the research area are examined, the relevant maps of the Map General Command are used. While analyzing the features related to urbanization, it was benefited from the master plans of the City Planning Directorates of the related municipalities, especially the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. For the development of population, records of population directorates and statistical data of TURKSTAT were used. The photographs taken in the research area were used in the article and the results of the interviews conducted with the village headmen and the residents of the district with the face-to-face interview technique were also evaluated. The total population of Sultangazi district is 513,022 in 2014 and also it is one of the districts with the fastest growing population in Istanbul. The rapid increase in the district population is due to the fact that the birth rate is high and that Istanbul is one of the regions with excessive migration. The employment opportunities in Istanbul and the fact that the rents are more suitable in some regions of the Sultangazi District are the main reasons for increasing migration to this region. Therefore the District, due to rapid population growth, there are many problems such as slums, unplanned urbanization, lack of infrastructure and unemployment.
