The Reading of Murathan Mungan’s ‘A Present-Day Cinderella’ Within the Context of Intertextual Relations


No text can be in existence solitarily in literary process, but it does emerge through interrelating with preexisting texts. Because texts can maintain their continuousness with the subsequent. Intertextuality explains dimensions of this interrelation by setting forth a text’s interrelatedness with the preexistent ones. It is seen that an author converts an existent text within the frame of originality in an intertextual relation which is densely put into practice in postmodern narratives. The story of Murathan Mungan –who is a postmodern writer– named ‘A Present-day Cinderella’ is a reinterpretation of ‘the Cinderella tale’. The author utilizes the tale as a subtext and composes his story by following traces of this tale. In this article, common points and differences of Murathan Mungan’s story and the Cinderella tale are goint to be determined in the context of intertextual relations.
