Fausto Zonaro’nun Fatih Sultan Mehmed’in İstanbul’a girişini ve İstanbul’un alınışını resmettiği eserleri ile Namık Kemal’in şikayet hissi uyandıran “toplumun hüznüdür, billahi kendi derdim aklıma gelmez” diyerek toplumsal dertlere yöneldiğini anlatan beyti bu örneklerden biridir.
The development of calligraphy has been in parallel with the expansion and spread of Islam. As a result, the art of calligraphy has been chiefly devoted to the transcription of religious texts, most notably verses from the Quran and Prophetic traditions (hadiths). Beyond religious texts, calligraphers incorporated a wide range of literary forms, including aphorisms, poetry, folk quatrains, proverbs, and rhymes. The inclusion of these expressions reflected an understanding that calligraphy should not be restricted to religious content alone, but could also embody the ideas, values, and expressions that permeated daily life. Composers, poets, and painters have likewise created works that give voice to human emotions. Among the notable examples are the paintings of Fausto Zonaro depicting Mehmed the Conqueror’s entry into Istanbul and the conquest of the city, as well as a couplet by Namık Kemal, which conveys a profound sense of social concern: “It is the sorrow of society; by God, my own troubles do not come to mind.” In addition to conveying values through artistic expression, calligraphers also incorporated texts that articulated emotional responses to events such as wars, earthquakes, and epidemics. Through these texts, they reflected not only their own emotional and intellectual worlds but also the states of mind of their audience. The inscriptions produced by calligraphers such as Necmeddin Okyay, İsmail Hakkı Altunbezer, and Hamid Aytaç suggest a deliberate effort to communicate ethical and spiritual teachings. This is evident in their use of expressions commonly encountered in everyday life, including “Be tolerant,” “This too shall pass, yâ Hû” “Neither the moment nor sorrow is everlasting,” and “God is sufficient; all else is but desire.” The production of these works was shaped by both social and individual circumstances. Through its close integration with daily life, calligraphy also came to serve as a medium of advising its audience to exercise patience and tolerance. This indicates that calligraphy is not limited to the materials of pen, paper, and ink, but constitutes an art form that conveys profound messages, one that addresses the viewer, and provides interpretive guidance. This study aims to examine thematic content and compositional experiments that reflect the influence of contemporary social structures on calligraphic art.
