Düşünce tarihi boyunca insanın duyguları pek çok esere konu olmuştur. Sanattan felsefeye, edebiyata, psikolojiye, sosyolojiye hatta teolojiye ilham veren duygular Antik Yunan felsefesinden günümüze pek çok filozofun düşüncesinde yer almaktadır. Edebiyat ve sanat dışındaki alanlarda yeterli ilgiyi göremese de zamanla insanın eylemlerini etkileme gücüne vurgu yapıldığı da olmuştur. İnsanın akıllı bir varlık olduğu düşüncesinden hareket eden filozofların dahi en azından ahlak alanındaki gücüne dikkat çektiği duygular, insan yaşamının en etkili yönlendiricisidir. Bu nedenle felsefede duygu çalışmaları eski ancak duygu felsefesi çalışmaları oldukça yenidir. Duygu konusu, psikoloji, sosyoloji, psikiyatri, biyoloji vb. bilimlerin ortak konusu olarak disiplinler arası bir konumdadır. Tüm bilgi alanlarının ortak olduğu husus ise duyguların insan yaşamındaki merkezi etkisidir. Bu boyuta işaret eden ve yaşadığı dönem itibariyle pek çok düşünürü de bu bağlamda etkileyen on dokuzuncu yüzyıl filozofu Arthur Schopenhauer duyguların özellikle de aşkın, insan yaşamındaki yerini sorgulamıştır. Benzer şekilde Lev Tolstoy da yaşadığı dönemi ve toplum yaşamını sorgulamış, verdiği eserlerde derin duygu analizleri yapmıştır. Metinde, yaklaşımları arasında benzerlikler kurabileceğimiz Arthur Schopenhauer ve Lev Tolstoy’un aşk konusundaki değerlendirmeleri duygu felsefesi bağlamında ele alınmaktadır. Duygunun mahiyetini, çeşitlerini insan yaşamının farklı boyutlarına etkisini araştıran duygu felsefesi açısından bu iki düşünüre göre aşkın insan yaşamındaki yeri, anlamı, önemi ve etkisi değerlendirilmektedir.
Throughout the history of thought, human emotions have been the subject of many works. Emotions, which inspire art, philosophy, literature, psychology, sociology and even theology, have been in the thoughts of many philosophers from Ancient Greek philosophy to the present day. Although they have not received sufficient attention in areas other than literature and art, there has also been an emphasis on their power to influence human actions over time. Even philosophers who acted on the idea that humans are intelligent beings have drawn attention to their power, at least in the field of morality, as emotions are the most effective guides of human life. For this reason, studies on emotions in philosophy are old, but studies on the philosophy of emotions are quite new. The subject of emotions is an interdisciplinary subject, as a common subject of sciences such as psychology, sociology, psychiatry, biology, etc. The common point of all fields of knowledge is the central effect of emotions on human life. The nineteenth-century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, who pointed to this dimension and influenced many thinkers in this context due to the period he lived in, questioned the place of emotions, especially love, in human life. Similarly, Lev Tolstoy also questioned the period he lived in and social life and made deep emotional analyses in his works. In the text, the evaluations of Arthur Schopenhauer and Lev Tolstoy, whose approaches we can establish similarities between, on the subject of love are discussed in the context of the philosophy of emotion. In terms of the philosophy of emotion, which investigates the nature and types of emotion and its effects on different dimensions of human life, the place, meaning and effect of love in human life according to these two thinkers are evaluated.
