Perceptions of Cappadocia: A Metaphor Analysis

Cappadocia region encompasses the provinces of Nevşehir, Aksaray, Niğde, Kırşehir, and Kayseri. The region has become a significant touristic destination, thanks to the unique beauty of the fairy chimneys, created by volcanic eruptions, wind, rain and floods. The aim of this study is to analyze the perceptions of the local people in Nevşehir and Eskişehir on the destination of Cappadocia through the use of metaphors. The study group consists of local people living in Nevşehir and Eskişehir. The study data was gathered using face-to-face interviews via a semi-structured questionnaire form with 50 individuals from Nevşehir and 50 from Eskişehir. This way, the perceptions on the Cappadocia region of both the people living in the region and those who live outside were determined and compared. The phrase “Cappadocia is like …. for me, because …” was written in the questionnaire form and the participants were asked to fill in the blanks in the phrase. The data were analyzed using the content analysis method. According to the results, the participants living in Nevşehir developed 45 different metaphors regarding Cappadocia, while those living in Eskişehir have developed 43. The most frequent metaphors of Nevşehir residents were “my home” and “land of fairytales”, while the most frequent metaphor of Eskişehir residents was determined to be “fairytale”. However, it was also found that participants from Nevşehir have developed more negative metaphors than those living in Eskişehir. The study is considered to contribute to effective destination planning by determining what a destination means for both the local residents and potential tourists. On the other hand, it is also thought that the study will contribute to the literature on metaphor analysis, a field which increasingly gains importance.
