Aralarında dikotomik bir ilişki bulunan birey ve toplum kavramlarının her biri, tarihsel olarak bazı dönemlerde belirgin şekilde öne çıkmıştır. Özellikle geleneksel tarım toplumlarında veya dinsel değerlerin baskın olduğu yerlerde ‘toplumcu’ bir anlayış ön planda iken modern toplumlarda bireyin konumu toplumsal olanın önüne geçmiştir. Modernleşme ile yaşanan değişim sürecinin vitrini ise aile kurumu olmuş ve aile birçok yönden dönüşüme uğramıştır. Bu çalışmada, son yüzyıllarda önemli ölçüde değişim ve dönüşüme uğrayan ailenin birey-toplum ilişkisi üzerinden konumunun, ailede yaşanan yapısal ve işlevsel değişimlerin ve bu değişimler üzerinde etkili faktörlerin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu bağlamda çalışmada birey ve toplum kavramları, modernleşme süreciyle birlikte ailede yaşanan yapısal ve işlevsel değişimler, ailenin geleceğini tehdit eden olası risk faktörleri incelenmiş ve ailenin geleceğinin genel bir değerlendirilmesi yapılmıştır. Materyal olarak, aile kurumu ile ilgili yerli ve yabancı literatürden yararlanılmış, yöntemde ise söz konusu kaynakların yorumlanması ve sentezlenmesi ile ailenin yakın geçmişteki seyrinin incelenmesi ve günümüzde aile kurumunun içinde bulunduğu koşulların gelecekte hangi yöne doğru evirileceğinin sosyolojik boyuttan bir değerlendirilmesi esas alınmıştır. Çalışmanın ulaştığı sonuç ise dikotomik ilişkiye sahip birey ve toplum kavramlarının modernleşme ile müphemleştiği, değerlerden arınmış aile modelinin günümüzde giderek belirginleştiği, bireyciliğin fazlasıyla öne çıkarıldığı ve bununla bağlantılı diğer bazı gelişmelerin ailenin geleceğini tehdit ettiği yönündedir.

Each of the concepts of individual and society, which have a dichotomous relationship between them, has come to the fore in some historical periods. While a 'socialist' understanding is at the forefront, especially in traditional agricultural societies or where religious values ​​are dominant, the position of the individual in modern societies has taken precedence over the social one. The showcase of the change process experienced with modernization has been the family institution and the family has been transformed in many ways. In this study, it is aimed to examine the position of the family, which has undergone significant changes and transformations in the last centuries, through the individual-society relationship, the structural and functional changes experienced in the family, and the factors affecting these changes. In this context, the concepts of individual and society, structural and functional changes in the family with the modernization process, possible risk factors that threaten the future of the family were examined and a general evaluation of the future of the family was made. Domestic and foreign literature on the family institution was used as the material, and the method was based on the interpretation and synthesis of these sources, the examination of the family in the recent past, and the sociological evaluation of the future conditions of the family institution today. The result of the study is that the concepts of the individual and society with a dichotomous relationship have become ambiguous with modernization, the family model free of values ​​has become increasingly evident today, individualism is emphasized, and some other related developments threaten the future of the family.
