Menkıbe (religious anecdotes), inherited from generation to generation within oral literary tradition, just like other literary productions, bloomed in public imagination and became a dominant element in reflecting the culture. It contained people's religious beliefs and faith; and thus, attained a sacred status. This is due to the fact that the heroes were real life figures and conserved their high esteem even after their deaths. Having sociological functions, the literary products in question correct the disruption and disorder within a society with the help of wonders demonstrated by 'veli' (the patrons). In addition, the narratives forming around their tombs distributed in separate places prevent sacred and moral set of values to be forgotten and ensure a kind of control mechanism over the society by transferring religious and traditional values to new generation. On the other hand, travelogues are the rich cultural treasures, written by travelers, depicting the visual and spatial qualities of places visited. Evliya Celebi Seyahatnamesi (Travelogues) forms the main source of this paper in that its content covers a vast area to be also considered as religious anecdote. In this article, the anecdotes, specific to Anatolia region, detected and reviewed in Evliya Celebi Travelogue will be analyzed in detail with reference to Ahmet Yasar Ocak's classification of motifs.

As proverbs include the cultural unity, experiences, and life perspective of a society, they enlighten the future generations with an artistic identity. The concepts used in this identity touch upon the lives of the people in a given society and leave a mark on their collective memory. For Turkish culture, mountain is one of these concepts for the reason that it has been an inevitable part of the geography Turks have been living in since they claimed their place in history. Hence, they have employed mountains aesthetically in their works of arts. Mountains have been an image (a subject matter) not only for proverbs but also for Turkish folk literature, classical Turkish literature, and modern Turkish literature. What makes the mountains imaginatively significant? For sure, they appeal to the eye. Thus, in the conciousness of people, they exist with their spatial qualities. In addition to coming to the fore thanks to their shapes and sizes, their appearances make them significant. To expose the imaginariness, the qualities of the image should be determined. Proverbs, which represent the collective and the oldest ways of thinking of a society, are the ones to track down the traces of mountains in literary platform. In this study, after a general description of proverbs, I intend to present the spatial characteristics through which the concept of mountain is studied in proverbs.

Modality, aspect and tense are the verbal categories analysed frequently by the linguists in current studies. Although the tense in these categories analysed typically, modality is randomly studied, the aspect is not enough studied. In many studies outside the Turkish literature, although there are classifications made on these three categories for each one, the categories are not considered seperately, in these classifications. For tense, there is a taxonomy of past, present and future which is common in almost all languages. Aspectual classifications are based mostly on the contradictions between “perfect/imperfect”. Although the mood is depicted as the manner of verb, modality is the form of mood in grammar. The lack of descriptions about these three categories in literature is reflected to the Turkish course books and the process of Turkish education exactly. Tense is processed in Turkish course books (as past, present, future and aorist), but the aspect is never processed. And the modality as described in the literature is processed differently in Turkish course books. There are significant differences between the descriptions / classifications of these three categories and the descriptions / classifications in the teaching process of Turkish and Turkish course books. For overcoming this differences, a new and a compatible classification constructed on the base of classifications in the literature is required. And then, this requirement have to be reflected to the Turkish lessons and Turkish course books. In this study, the descriptions on modality, aspect and tense in the literature and the informations about these categories in Turkish course books is compared and a new classification is introduced on the base of the assumption of the requirement of a classification.

The genre of modernist Uyghur Turkic language fiction first emerged in Northwest China (East Turkistan) at the turn of the twentieth century. Since that time it has undergone a great deal of development as an heir to a rich classical poetry tradition. Through this expansion, a number of influential literary writers have emerged among Uyghur intellectuals. Yet despite the growing depth of this body of literary expression, much of this work is gone unnoticed in the Turkish world. In large part this absence of recognition is due to problems of translation and transnational politics. In this essay, we set out to begin to address this gap in Turkish Studies scholarship by introducing the work of Zordun Sabir, one of the most influential fiction writers in twentieth century Uyghur literature. Many of his works of historical fiction have had a deep effect in shaping the reception of fiction writing in Uyghur popular culture. In this essay, we argue that Zordun Sabir’s role as a literary figure, as well as his work itself, have been central in promoting fiction as a literary genre that provides Uyghurs with a sense of their own history and values.

Language, which is a living being, and words that form a language constantly change, evolve, and renew themselves in line with the needs of the communities. In this study, firstly the notion of language has been explained, then the synchronic and diachronic analyses of languages and sign, concept, meaning and semantics were mentioned. The fact that living languages can change is one of the most important characteristics of languages. Considering the fact that the language should be constantly interwoven with the society due to social, cultural events, transitions from other languages and developments in the field of technology, new meanings can be added to the existing ones and even the old words can be excluded. As long as societies use words in new contexts, the meanings of words change slowly. This new meaning can sometimes not be in the same meaning as its original meaning. In this case, the concepts reflected by the signs can only change over time, and the changes mentioned as a process, a passage of time, must be examined in a large scale and diachronic way. In addition, the study emphasized the types of meaning changes after mentioning the social, historical, linguistic, and spiritual reasons underlying the changes among words. As a result, in the study, these inevitable changes were

Thomas Bernhard is one of the most important figures in the twentieth century in German-speaking countries’ literature. It has achieved great fame not only with the works it has given but also with the scandals which are caused by his rebellious character and literature events. When he died, he left behind a very important collection of novels, stories, theater works and poetry. The concept of "research" (Studie) is extremely important in works written by Bernhard. According to a survey, at least half of the large-scale prose texts Bernhard wrote between 1963 and 1968 were shaped around the "research" theme. It is possible to distinguish three main groups of fields that are subject to the concept of research in the works. These are artist biographies; natural science researches and philosophical researches. Thomas Bernhard's "das Kalkwerk", published in 1970, is a novel based on the "research" theme. The story tells the story of Konrad, who was taken to an old lime factory in order to conduct a research on the hearing organ that was not made until that day. Konrad has completed his research on the hearing organ and is waiting for the appropriate moment to put them on paper. But this aim never occurs because of Konrad's own reasons, and the story ends with a tragic murder. In this study, it is aimed to determine the functions that the research theme has assumed in the novel. For this, the qualities of the research in the dream of the novel hero Konrad were first put forward. Then, how the theme influenced the fiction of the novel was handled in the form of materials.

Mankind applies various ways to separate animals from one another and carries out the naming process within a certain system. Because Kazakhstan has a wide geographical range, it hosts many animals and these animals are titled in the direction of various elements in Kazakh Turkic. In this study, more than 700 names used for birds in the Kazakh Turkic vocabulary have been identified, and the formation system of these names has been emphasized. The vocabulary of the bird names in the Kazakh Turkic has been revealed and their Latin and Turkish equivalents have been shown, and the formation system of the names identified has been set forth. As a result of the investigation, it is seen that the names of the birds in Kazakh Turkic are comprised of either two words or single word. While it is seen that the adjective clasue is used especially in the two-word structures, it is found that in single-word structures sometimes reflection voices are used, sometimes new names are obtained by using affixes found in Kazak Turkic, and sometimes foreign words are used either directly or by taking affixes. It has been found that various factors have been utilized while naming the birds such as color, limb, plant, mineral, animal, object, country names, time expressions, names of residence place or whereabouts, bird’s cry, size, movement, voice, appearance, gender, age and use of verbs. The methods used in bird names are not unique to birds or Kazakh Turks. The fact that a system similar to the methods used in the Kazakh Turkic is being used in the creation of animal names in Turkic and other Turkish dialects once again proves the existence of a common language and culture.

The work entitled as Ahmet Cevdet Paşa ve Zamanı written by Fatma Aliye provides information about early stages of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha’s life and people and events related to that period. The work is one of two works written by the author on history. Although Fatma Aliye is renowned as first women novelist, she was possibly the first women who write history in Ottoman period. Fatma Aliye was born in 1862 as the daughter of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha, renowned historian, statesman, and jurist. She had a quality education by taking private tutorials from various teachers. She learned French and followed works produced in the West and made translations. She wrote novels and columns in newspapers particularly focusing on problems of women. Having a historian father allowed her to take tutorials from her father which in turn led her to study history. Thanks to her father, when writing history she had privilege of accessing documents, knowledge and experience. Ahmet Cevdet Paşa ve Zamanı was built around resources that include stories her father told, works of her father and various documents left by her father. Although the work is, to large extent, based on Tezakir written by Ahmet Cevdet Paşa, it is an interesting piece of work because it includes many details that cannot be found anywhere else. In this study, firstly details about the life of Fatma Aliye is provided. Then her work is analysed in terms of her use of sources and the way she deals with historical events. Afterwards, some inferences are carried out about Fatma Aliye’s historiography by also making comparison with her second history work, Tarih-i Osmanî’nin Bir Devre-i Mühimmesi Kosova Zaferi-Ankara Hezimeti.

The translation of advertisements should be regarded as a special field within Translation Studies. They have a specific intention with regard to the recipient due to their appellative character. These advertising texts and slogans are meant to influence behavior and include marketing strategies. As a result of globalization, products are marketed globally and companies endeavor to use their commercials and advertising texts internationally in order to avoid production cost for advertisement campaigns. Due to the high demand in this field, there are translation offices specialized in this area. Advertisements are peculiar in so far as their texts and the associated visual materials carry a special function within the complex entity that is the culture they were conceived in. Cultural difference as well as linguistic peculiarities must be considered with regard to their impact in the target language and target culture. The translator should be able to cross cultural barriers and should have the skill to produce creative texts which work in the new market. The translation of persuasive advertising texts is a challenge for the translator. It requires different approaches towards the source materials. The present work endeavors to evaluate how well the “five-steps-methods” developed by Smith/Klein-Braley can be applied to persuasive advertising texts. Using examples, the importance of localization for advertising texts will be illustrated.

Karamanlides; who lived in Anatolia, Balkan Peninsula, Syrian territory and spoke Turkish but wrote its alphabet in Greek, were Orthodox Christians. They particularly lived in Karaman, Konya, Kayseri, Isparta, Burdur, Aydın, Istanbul and coasts of Black Sea in the region of Anatolia. Despite it’s not certain from where they got their names and whether they’re Turkish or not, Karamanlides introduced themselves as Turkish people because they didn’t know any language except for Turkish. Karamanlides had an attitude towards supporting national struggle in the War of Independence but they were thought as Greeks because of the religions they believed and they started to live in Greece since the population exchange in 1926. Despite both Turkish, the language which they spoke, and Turkish traditions were common among the ones who went to Greece at first, today their numbers decreased in Greece and most of them forgot both Turkish and Turkish traditions. They created various written works in Greek Alphabet and also used this alphabet for tablets. The works and tablets which were written in Greek alphabet had a significant importance regarding Turkish language and history. In this work, the works which were written in Greek Alphabet and named 1914 Nevşehir Annual, Moni Flavianon, Adelfotis’ Kanunismos, Hikâyet-i Şah Ismail were examined, it was dwelled on ι (yota) character and given information about structure and position of this character in Karamanlidika.
Safahat, one of the immortal works of Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, is accepted by the majority among the greatest works of Turkish literature. In his masterpiece, Âkif skillfully reflects the period in which he lived in many aspects. However, in this period when Safahat was written, the Ottoman Empire faced with several problems such as wars, dissolution, and decline. Thus, it was expected that humor was not adopted in Safahat. Nonetheless, the current study indicates that humor, one of the narrative techniques used in Safahat, took an important place in this work. Humorous elements were frequently used in all chapters except Hakkın Sesleri, which is the Third Book. Mehmet Akif criticized the faults, mistakes, inappropriate and absurd behaviors in his surroundings with a ready wit. He sometimes, especially in dialogs, employed humor for entertainment and pastime. It is obvious that he made use of humor in Safahat. It was aimed in this study to demonstrate the elements and the importance of humor in Safahat.

Each image that belongs to the city both hold the city itself together with its memory and makes the social relationship between people visible as part of space. In this sence, the “genius loci” described as the protective spirirt of the space according to the religion of the ancient Rome, is an important notion which reveals the efficiency of topographic characteristics in literary texts as part of heros and plot. According to this notion translated into turkish as “The Spirit of Space”; the city, which is thought to have a spirit that can be associated with its cultural past, has a living entity. With making sense of its presence in architecture, sociology, philosophy, history and also inevitably in literature, genius loci makes understand the change that is accompanied by modern life surrounded with subjective, objective, and temporal elements. In this sence, on account of his artistic talent, Yury Valantinovich Trifonov, who tries to get a concordance between displaying the daily life and the necessity of thinking about it and handle the city as an artistic object of research, is accepted as one of the leading authors of the literary texts of Moscow belonging to the second half of the 20th century Russian literature. The author combines the city Moscow with both his past and the past of his heros whom he has created in his literary works which he has written about Moscow. In all works of Trifonov, Moscow is not only a place where some events have taken place but also an artistic model of space in which the heros have complicated relationships intracting with one another. The expression of author in this work, he not only handles the city as a place or an image but also as a living organism, making the readers feel the spirit of the city and consisting of both the past and the present, will be scrutinized in his work called “The Exchange” benefiting from an interdisciplinary method.

Elif Shafak is an award-winning prominent novelist who was born in Strasbourg, France, in 1971. Being one of the most widely read woman writer in Turkey, she writes her novels in both Turkish and English. She has written nine novels most of which became best-sellers. Her books have been translated into more than forty languages. Her novel Honour (Iskender) which was published in the summer of 2011 was accused of plagiarism for its resemblence to Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. Through a close reading, one can observe that though there are some similarities in terms of the theme and the characters between Shafak’s Honour and Smith’s White Teeth, on the contrary there are also differences as well in terms of the basic elements of the novel. It is usual that the novels dealing with the same themes will most likely have some similar characters entangled with similar problems. Considering what the term plagiarism denotes, this article aims to highlight the resemblences and differences between the two novels through a close reading of both. Thus, the two novels are going to be compared in terms of such literary elements as setting, plot, characters, themes, and point of view.

In this study, the translation will be criticized considering the equivalence between source and target languages based on four different translations of “Il n'y a pas d'amour heureux” by Louis Aragon, one of the most important French poets. During the study, general translation strategies will be leveraged. Four different translations by CemalSüreya, TahsinSaraç, Gertrude Durusoy – AhmentNecdet and OrhanSuda will be used. In the study, source text will be abbreviated as KM and target texts will be abbreviated as EM1, EM2, EM3 and EM4, respectively. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the kinds of shifts applied during the translations of poem “Il n'y a pas d'amour heureux” by Louis Aragon from French to Turkish, to examine the translation strategies by which these shifts are transferred from source language to target language, and to emphasize the different tastes of these translations. In the findings section of the study, poem translations of four different authors are evaluated on the basis of general translation strategies. In considerations of the findings, although the similarities between source and target languages of these four poems, the differences are more significant. Each translation gives a new meaning to the poem. In translations, the strategies, including adaptation, localization, permutation, addition and deletion are commonly used. The least used strategies are metanarrative (by generalization) translation, hyponymy (by customization) and word-for-word translation. During the translation of poem in question, borrowing, imitation, foreignization and compensation are not used. According to findings, there are semantic and formal similarities and differences in poem considered. As each language has its own grammar rules, structural difference are inevitable, also as there might not always be an equivalence for a source language word in the target language, it is highly possible to observe semantic differences, too. As a result, although there are similarities and differences between source and target languages in terms of equivalency, it can be said that the poem translation is a difficult process. It is needed to mention that knowing the author and her/his style is very important in poem translations, because each author interpret the poem within the frame of her/his own style. As the grammar rules of the source language differs from that of the target language, we can say that each translated poem is actually a new one.

Müfide Ferit Tek (1892-1971) is a Turkish woman writer who produced her works between the years 1911 and 1923 generally known as the Period of National Literature in Turkish Literature. Müfide Ferit Tek wrote her novels with the feelings of ‘nation’ and ‘nationalism’ along with the other authors writing in the same period such as Ömer Seyfettin, Halide Edib Adıvar, Ahmet Hikmet Müftüoğlu and Aka Gündüz. She is famous for her first novel Aydemir (1918) and her second novel Pervaneler (1924). In Aydemir, Tek created her main character as the embodiment of the Turkish ideal. He is a young man who devotes his life to spread national feelings among the Turks oppressed and exploited by Russian administration. He goes to those zones under Russian domination out of Turkey. Aydemir is a novel through which Tek tried to strengthen Turkish nationalism and identity. In the novel a constellation of the Turkish ideal and the images from the western world ranging from literature to religion and mythology takes the reader’s attention. Therefore this study aims to depict the intertextual relations between the novel, Aydemir and firstly, medieval romances in English Literature, secondly, Christianity and lastly, western mythology. The novel offers not only striking parallels with the medieval romances with its reflection of the sublimity in love between Aydemir and Hazin, but also resemblances between Aydemir and Christ as both redeemers/saviours and scapegoats and sacrificial figures. Aydemir also seems to bear a mythological aspect in respect of the reflection of the dying-reviving gods in Greek mythology in the character of Aydemir. The paper would be one examining how Tek exploited western literature, religion and mythology in the writing of her novel and presenting these connections in Aydemir, which includes an agglutination of the Turkish ideal and the values belonging to the western world.
